how to practically optimize distractions on your computer
constraints = freedom
Block the most addictive parts of social media on your computer — specifically the algorithmic feed.
If you haven’t already, consider setting up the modern dumb phone as a complementary strategy.
required software
Cold Turkey — download from getcoldturkey.com
- Free version provides basic blocking
- Paid version (one-time purchase) enables scheduling and advanced features
the three essential blocks
There are only 3 blocks you need:
- Algorithmic Feed — block on a schedule to limit exposure to algorithmically-generated content
- Silence — a separate category for messaging and communication distractions during focus periods
- Unproductive Websites — block permanently, 24/7 (sites that provide zero value)
Here they are:
Algorithmic Feeds
This blocks the home pages of Reddit, YouTube, and Twitter — the algorithmic feeds that keep you scrolling.
📌 I would recommend setting it on a schedule (not blocking the feeds 24/7). The feed can still serve you valuable content, and using it less will make the algorithm extra picky about showing you the best videos/tweets/posts.
Download the blocklist files:
- Algorithmic Feeds exceptions.txt (0.5KB)
- Algorithmic Feeds websites.txt (0.1KB)
Import these into Cold Turkey under a block called “Algorithmic Feeds” and set it on a schedule that works for your routine.
Silence
This is a basic blocklist that covers most chatting apps and websites — Slack, Discord, Messenger, WhatsApp web, etc. I don’t set a timer or password on this. I only turn it on so it closes all the tabs and silences applications.
Useful for deep work sessions or when you are feeling overwhelmed.
📌 I would recommend keeping the lock “unlocked” so you can turn it on or off at anytime.
Unproductive Websites
I would recommend finding and creating a list for yourself. Ideas are things like tabloids, gossip sites, news aggregators, or complete time-wasters that bring you no joy.
You can find a big compilation of community blocklists here: github.com/blocklistproject/Lists
Bonus: You can also block certain search terms using Cold Turkey. Add this pattern:
google.com/*q=*SEARCHTERM*
Replace SEARCHTERM with whatever term you want to block yourself from searching.
